Flat Daddies

Apparently some government official's bright idea was to make a bunch of life size cutouts of soldiers in Iraq so they can stand in for the real soldiers. It occurs to me that you could do something really sick with imprinting, like taking a picture of a duck and then convincing a baby that it's her father. I'm sick, sick I tell you.

Mostly though, it just seems a little creepy.

In 2005 I read about some marines making cardboard cutouts and dressing them in camouflage shirts to "man" observation posts in Iraq because they didn't have enough soldiers, which is arresting in its own way, but this Flat Daddy and Flat Mommy stuff made me feel very weird, lost in my own skull sort of. I mean, I really don't know what to think. The family-support program started with the Maine National Guard, and from what I've read, the families are very happy with it.
