I accept that America is an empire, and an unjust unrighteous one at that. However, what I can't get over is, as an empire, we really suck. We can't do anything right. Say what you will about the British Empire, but they oppressed people with efficiency.
We can't even do that without ridiculous numbers of our own people getting killed.

You assume that the point is to *not* get a lot of people killed. IMO the real purpose of going into Iraq was to take a more direct role in the "lynchpin of the middle east", since Saddam was moving his oil money into Euros vs dollars. These crazies' goal is to create a civil war in Iraq, to destabilize the region and prevent the arab states from using the obvious power they wield over the world.
