I don't know if I've mentioned this before. But apparently a lot of men in Taiwan, or at least a number that is perceived to be a lot, get brides from Vietnam and other places. In fact there was a book in the bookstore called, "Teach your Vietnamese wife Chinese." Like in America, mail order brides are desireable because they are supposed to be more traditional and less aggressive than women from the native country.
It seems a little weird, because when they have kids are they considered fully Chinese or half?

wait wait, why do taiwanese men get mail order brides? are taiwanese women choosing not to marry at all? or are they not marrying taiwanese men? are taiwanese men marrying more than one taiwanese woman so there's a shortage? or has some sort of evolutionary mechanism made taiwanese men too incompatable with taiwanese women. don't tell it's because of white people.
Amber told me this story about a guy who called her work to make an appointment for his "bride" (his word) who doesn't speak English. I think he also offered to act as the translator during the appointment.
Which is to say, mail order brides are the most fucked up thing ever.
Good question, Clara, I dont really know either...except I've heard that women are getting to be more successful in Taiwan and many of them are choosing not to marry. And you know about the plummeting birth rate.
