Reasons which make it difficult for me to not hate white people

When I am introduced to my roommate's parents and her mom acts like I'm hearing impaired, gesturing to herself and saying her name loudly and slowly.

if I am accosted by one more man at the bus stop who tells me he "would give anything to hold an Asian woman in his arms" I won't be responsible for any broken bones. One is far more than enough. I would have punched him anyway, but that would have involved actually interacting with him. Getting off work is enough of a drag without this kind of crap.

Heart of Darkness

My mother watched The Last King of Scotland over the last couple days, and I half watched it, mostly because I'm sleeping on the couch and I don't have my own room, so I'm kind of out there by default, and I have a hard time ignoring the television. However, I was only half watching because it was hard for me to be interested in the story of a white man's journey into the heart of black darkness, oops, I mean Africa.

There have been lots of movies about the white man and the (not-so) noble savage, and what he learns from them. So I'm not really going to get into the racial politics. It's all pretty clear. And there's nothing that I can say that hasn't been said already. However, I'm interested in how the countries in Africa, and I like how they're all sort of lumped into "Africa" with the possible exception of South Africa which we all know has some white people and Nelson Mandela, with no distinction between countries or even regions.

I swear to God, there's some part where the captions read "Speaking in African." African?! I'd love to see the movie where someone is seen speaking "European" and I'd dearly love to know what that would sound like.

Frothing at the mouth aside, I was primarily struck with even in our supposedly post-colonialist age, we have a movie which seems so unabashedly to ape Heart of Darkness. Interestingly, the time period, although not contemporary, depicts Uganda in the post colonial age, struggling with its national identity. Not that we get a lot of focus on that from the film.

Africa, it seems, remains the go-to continent for films about savagery.

Y'know the thing is

I accept that America is an empire, and an unjust unrighteous one at that. However, what I can't get over is, as an empire, we really suck. We can't do anything right. Say what you will about the British Empire, but they oppressed people with efficiency.

We can't even do that without ridiculous numbers of our own people getting killed.

Can America please be consistent?

If immigrants are no more than a means to an end to us, cheap labor and guest workers, can we at least drop all the bullshit about "Give me your tired, your poor, your masses yearning to breathe free" please?

What are immigrants to us anyway? Future American citizens or cogs in a machine?

What infuriates me is how we can talk out of both sides of our mouths, saying how we are The Great Bringer of The Light of DEMOCRACY. We are no better than any country we denigrate ideologically. We are no better than China, we are no better than Russia, we are no better than North Korea, we sure as hell are not better than Israel. If we're the country of the straight talkers than just call it like it is, and cut the crap about this freedom and liberty. And give the statue back to the French.

Be consistent, people.

if people hate immigrants so fucking much, why don't they just boycott them, just like everything else we protest.

Stop eating food that immigrants harvested, grew, or cooked, stop going to places where immigrants work, stop buying things that immigrants made.

Oh, right, you can't. They're everywhere. Almost like an integral part of our society...or something...

And the next time one of those right wing pundits goes off about "the foreigners" or the "illegals" I'm really going to want to know who made his suit, and who mowed his lawn.

Oh yes, and I move that we rescind Michelle Malkin's Asian card. We can do that, right?
